In celebration of Canada’s upcoming 150th birthday, we scoured the country in search of the best dog bakeries in the True North! While there are plenty to choose from, these were our top five picks. Be sure to stop by with your pup for a treat (or two)!
Big Dog Little Dog
Bakeries for us two-footed creatures are a dime-a-dozen, but what about your four legged best friend? Big Dog Little Dog has been hard at work answering that question for over a decade now. The bakery was founded due to their love and care for their Belgian Malinois, Maddie. Maddie had quite the sensitive stomach her entire life, and as such, regular dog food and treats just wouldn’t do. After many months of research, intensive product testing by Maddie, as well as thorough quality assurance by Austin, their Husky/Lab mix, Big Dog Little Bakery was born!
Big Dog Little Dog specializes in baked treats, raw foods, cooked dinners, can/dry food, as well as birthday cakes for those very special days! All these delicious products are lovingly hand-made, using only the freshest ingredients, with no added salt, sugar, colourings or preservatives. If you ever find yourself near Confederation Park, soak up the scenery, and then talk a short stroll down to 4631 Hastings St. You, and your dog, will thank you.
If Pawsalicious‘ punny name has not already convinced you to pay them a visit, then continue reading. Located on 61 Galleria Parkway, Pawsalicious Bakery is your party expert in Markham, specializing in gluten free dog treats for all occasions (from barkdays, adoption anniversaries or just because!). Pawsalicious alsomakes a decadent assortment of organic treats such as pop, potato chips, peanut butter carob bones, truffles, and cup cakes. If dogs with cakes isn’t your thing (gasp), then not to worry, Pawsalicious has a fine collection of dog toys and accessories as well. Either way, you will make your dog’s day.
Pro tip #1 – search them up on Yelp and get a nifty discount on your next purchase.
Pro tip #2 – make sure to pick up the birthday cap for your dog while you’re there, it’s too cute!
Pro tip #3 – Pawsalicious organizes regular doggy meet ups for dog owners to socialize and meet new friends, and provide customized pawty packages for their clients, taking care of all the cleanup!
The Dogfather & Co.
Since 2001, Dogfather & Co. has been making Rosedale residents grin with their movie references, and also helping your dog waltz around town dressed to the “K9’s”. Yes? No? Trying to hard with the puns? No matter, but what does matter is how utterly fabulous the Dogfather is. Out of their super cute and functional store, Dogfather specializes in unique and stylish products for your four legged friend, such as custom dog beds, designer leather leashes and collars, as well as hand-knit and lovingly made doggie apparel. Fido will look better than you in no time.
If that wasn’t enough to peak your interest, keeping with the theme of the previous two, the Dogfather also bakes up a storm! Focusing on local, organic, and hand baked treats & cookies, they carry an array of selection and flavors, offering grain-free, raw, and vegetarian options. All of their baked goods are made with human grade ingredients, and can be custom made to cater to your dog’s allergies. It’s honestly a one stop shop – a boutique for your dog’s next wardrobe, a spa to keep those paws squeaky clean, as well as a cafe so that you and your doggie can enjoy some treats in the sunshine. Make sure to give them a follow on Twitter, and drop on by the next time you’re in Ramsden Park, at 1007 Yonge Street.
Lil JB’s Pupcakes
Ahh, I really can’t get enough of these puns! Lil JB’s Pupcakes namesake comes from Jessie and Bear, who teamed up with their owner Ronalda to form the company in 2012. Since them Lil JB’s Pupcakes have been creating wheat, grain, and meat free treats for those pups who have a trouble enjoying other store bought treats. Using natural and organic ingredients, each goodie contains no no added broth, salts, sugars, and are low in fat. As the name suggests, Lil JB’s makes wonderful cupcakes, but also has a whole host cakes, holiday themed items, and you have the option of making custom orders catered specially for you and your pup! Lil Jb’s is a Saskatoon favorite – make sure to take a gander, visit their Facebook page, and don’t be afraid to spoil your dog with a few treats once in a while.
Fez, Floyd, Ralphy, Ragley, Pepper, & Rosco – these are the diligent, loving, four-legged taste testers behind each delicious treat at Cheddar Dogs. Can six dogs be wrong? The answer is no, no they cannot. Located at Macleod Trail & 8th Ave, Cheddar Dogs believes in a no-preservatives, ingredients you can pronounce, dog treat company! Specializing in bite-sized goodies, as well as custom made birthday cakes, Cheddar Dogs does things right. Good, wholesome ingredients are at the core of each product they make, with more of their ingredients coming straight from Kingsland farmers market! Make sure to take a look through their website for more information, and read those cute little bios for the “taste-testers” if nothing else!
